A global survey of over 6000 English language learners discovered that 58% said that they were already using films and television as a study aid to improve their English (Zazulak, 2016). When learners listen to conversations between characters and understand their relationships they are able to better feel the cultural nuances of the language in a way not possible when studying through a textbook. The dialogue may feel fast at first, and the use of slang will create comprehension problems, but by first using English subtitles learners will become better used to the natural ebbs and flows of natural English. With time, as you become used to using TV programs to study, learners will rely less and less on the subtitles, leading to improved listening skills.
